Shenzhen Daily 2023-01-30 17:01

“FAN WU x Mi-Kyoung Lee: The Reflective Memories” is a fiber art exhibition that displays works by two female artists: Wu Fan from China and Mi-kyoung Lee from the United States.

Wu is also a textile and clothing scholar. She is a professor of the School of Art and Design at Shenzhen Polytechnic. Lee is a professor and director of the School of Art, Design, and Art History, College of Visual and Performing Art, James Madison University in the United States.

“Fiber art makes viewers get closer to art through this commonly seen material, enriches aesthetic experiences by reflecting artists’ ideas and triggers thoughts among visitors,” curators Lyu Hongrong and Li Hui said in the curatorial statement.

They said that the two artists both use natural elements to reflect their understanding of the world. “Feelings and emotions in the artists’ memories and their reflections on society and nature, reality and spirit, past and future are conveyed through natural objects.” For example, memories are transformed into flowers, leaves, forests, vines and other objects in their works.

The curators believe that fiber art, which evolved from weaving, connects its long history with new ideas, and connects human emotion through craftsmanship.

“The creative process of fiber art works is time-consuming. In the process of repetitive manual work such as coiling, knotting and twisting, the artists enter the realm of ‘integration of objects and subjects.’ Materials and crafts have become a medium that penetrates reality and spirit,” said the curators.
