SSO concert features violinist Renaud Capucon
Futian Government Online 2017-06-11 17:13

Conducted by Lin Daye, artistic director of Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SSO), the concert will bring audiences on a journey back in time. Presenting the works of Wagner, Bruch and Brahms, the concert will feature French violinist Renaud Capucon, one of today’s most sought-after violinists.

The program will open with “Rienzi Overture,” an early opera by Wagner. The substantial overture begins with a trumpet call and features the melody of the opera’s best-known aria and ends with a military march.

SSO will also perform “Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Minor” by Brahms — the last of his symphonies. Of all the great masters of the 19th century, Brahms was the one who most thoroughly absorbed the new study of music history and who understood the music of the past as well as of the present. So it is hardly surprising that his last and most modern symphony, arguably his greatest single symphonic achievement, should also be the one most deeply indebted to the music of the past, reviving techniques and forms that most people regarded as long dead, and making them live anew. According to a popular story, the composer completed reading the Greek tragedy “Oedipus” before creating this piece, which reflected his solemn thoughts on fate, death and inevitable solitude.

Collaborating with SSO, Capucon will perform Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor,” one of the most popular violin concertos in the repertoire. Rated by Gramophone as No. 6 of the top 10 violin concerti, it has been performed and recorded by many violinists and is Bruch’s most famous composition. The slow second movement is most admired for its melody, and is generally considered to be the heart of the concerto.

Capucon, 41, began his studies at the prestigious Paris Conservatory at 14, winning many awards during his five years there. He later studied with Thomas Brandis and Isaac Stern, and was awarded the Prize of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1997, Capucon was invited by Claudio Abbado to become concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, which he led for three summers. Since then, he has played concerti with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic under Haitink and Robertson, the Boston Symphony under Dohnanyi, the Paris Orchestra under Eschenbach and the Simon Bolivar Orchestra under Dudamel. He also tours extensively as a solo recitalist.

He plays the Guarneri del Gesu “Panette” (1737) that belonged to Isaac Stern, bought for him by the Banca Svizzera Italiana.
